BODY IMAGE AND THE SELF

Helpful ways to feeling more confident and satisfied in your own skin
We are all guilty of comparing our bodies with other people around us. We wouldn’t be
human if we didn’t. Whilst this is purely human nature, it is not mentally healthy to compare yourself with others as it actually prevents you achieving what you are capable of. (Tip: If you don’t know what you’re good at, ask other people or take partin something which makes you feel good about yourself)
Here are a few ways you can avoid comparing yourself to others and become more confident in the process:
- Question media images — We are constantly bombarded with images of unrealistic and unattainable bodies. Try not to compare yourself with them and remember that often what you see on TV and online are not true depictions of real people.
- Be mindful of how you feel when viewing social media and avoid websites that evoke feelings of inferiority or negativity in you.
- If you use Instagram, try to follow people who share your values or interests. Think of it as a means of encouraging a positive mindset.
- Focus on the positive things your body can accomplish. A great way to achieve this is to set goals for yourself, such as completing a run or other form of exercise, exploring a new place or learning a new language. By focusing your mind to achieve goals, you will naturally feel more confident in your own ability once you have accomplished them.
- Celebrate the ways in which you are unique – lt could be as simple as your appearance, skills or remembering an unforgettable experience you have had.
- Wear clothes that make you feel good and comfortable with your body.
- Try positive self-talk and affirmations to give you increased confidence.
- Empowering others empowers ourselves - focus on building one another up.
- Think about what your body can achieve rather than how it appears in front of you. The chances are after you consider your own value and self-worth, the person you see in the mirror will reflect this and in-turn will increase the confidence and respect you have with your own body.
By understanding and overcoming body image issues, it will greatly improve your overall mental health and
well-being for life!
